These Countries Are Not Too Welcoming Of American Tourists

Published on 09/29/2020

When you talk a lot, it could have both positive and negative impact, and some tourists have learned their outspoken attitude have earned their country a bad name. With this comes a lot of negative feedback related to foreign affairs and policies, and a lot of countries have started looking at American tourists with a “bad eye.” As you read on, you will learn of some nations worldwide with a low level of love for American tourists and are not very much welcomed when they arrive. We understand that some of the rumors may not be effective, but when it comes to foreign laws, the least a visitor can do is respect and obey them. Failure to respect will always give you that negative energy you don’t want.

Denmark

Americans seem to always present that “we’re the best” kind of lifestyle, and it is a big turnoff for Danish people. The attitude and lifestyle portrayed by the Danes are somewhat down-to-earth and simple by all means. They will always show you that spirit of gratitude and a good farewell on your way. However, with Americans showing as though they are above everyone, they are pretty much disliked.

Denmark

Russia

Well, just imagine trying to thaw ice outdoors while it’s snowing…that’s how cold the relationship between Russia and the Americans is. In recent times, Russia has launched a series of military uproots in Ukraine, and with the U.S. hitting out on the move, they have become a “scorn” for Russia. Some reports detail that over 70% of Russians dislike Americans, and with the airing of the TV show Chernobyl, it has somewhat made matters worse. Things of the past are certainly putting a strain on their relationship.

Russia

Russia

Greece

Not all Greeks are fond of Americans, and one of the latest reports from a Pew survey indicates this. Up to 63% of Greeks do not like Americans because their obsessive mentality has gotten on the nerves of everyone in Greece. Unfortunately, Greece is one of those nations that have a high debt bill hanging over their head, and with the attitude from America that it’ll be okay soon is not very welcoming. Their dislike extends to parliament as Greece’s ruling party, the KKE, or the Communist Party, has always criticized parts of the banking policy in America. Also, America’s love for capitalism is not an ideal thing for Greece.

Greece

Brazil

If you watch many American films, you will see a lot of Brazilian locations being highlighted in them. Sadly, there is not much respect shown to the country itself or the people by America and those who visit. In reality, the lands and houses you see in these films belong to Brazilian natives, yet it is an American story that is told – how ironic. When American tourists visit Brazil, the warm welcome is not always present.

Brazil

Brazil

Argentina

The tension and hatred between Argentina and America cannot be resolved in a courtroom, nor does any lawyer possess the skills to heal any rift. America accused Argentina of breaching people’s rights during World War I, but this did not sit well with the Argentines. Being a sneaky nation is what Argentina views America as even up to this day.

Argentina

Argentina

Spain

More than half of Spain sees America in disgust and not one of their favorite groups of people. The war instigated by George W. Bush and the winning power of Donald Trump has made the foreign policy even worse in the eyes of the Spanish. They prefer to see a president coming with words of peace than one who is preferring to build a war.

Spain

Spain

Indonesia

Americans sometimes tend not to save their vacation money, and when they reach their destination, they beg to keep themselves going. Their style of “winging it” is called “beg-packing,” where they stay focused on street sides to beg locals for cash and other resources. This is a disgusting attitude that Indonesians do not like seeing how poverty is hitting the country hard.

Indonesia

Indonesia

Australia

Australians believe America’s push for power is building a lot of strive and pouring strength on racism and discontent. America’s fight for supremacy with their white culture also helps them make them dislike them even more. Donald Trump is not popular in Australia, and with him being the president, the dislike for the country has been transferred to the tourists.

Australia

Australia

Netherlands

Many people in the Netherlands dislike Americans as they feel a lot of negative energy coming from them. For a lot of those living in the Netherlands, they see Americans as thinking too much of themselves, but they are nothing more than a set of paranoid, overweight, racist, and extremist-thinking people. But, with not all Americans thinking that way, they have some level of hope things could change.

Netherlands

Netherlands

Ireland

Irish see Americans as being arrogant and think too much of themselves. Well, if a lot of us fail to believe this revelation, the reality of the thought coming from those who deal directly with the tourists (merchants), we have to say otherwise. Many business owners in Ireland who deal with tourists are disgusted because they think the U.S dollar can be spent in their country. But, with the reality that Europe has its currency, they can’t stand the boastful attitude of the Americans.

Ireland

Ireland

Egypt

Egypt has a negative view of America (a large percentage) because they fail countless times to see positive reasons with the Muslim Brotherhood and also with their support of Hosni Mubarak. But, seeing it is generally politically-based, there are assumptions that they cannot use it against them.

Egypt

Egypt

Belarus

Since a long time back, Russia and Belarus have had a great relationship, and because Russia and America are not the best of friends, that hatred and dislike have been adopted by Belarus. Based on a recent report, it showed that more than 65% of Belarussians have a strong dislike for Americans and their tourists alike.

Belarus

Belarus

Slovenia

The current president of America has made most Slovenians have a strong dislike for them. However, there is still some connection between the two countries as the current first lady of America is from Slovenia. Well, let’s watch and see how this one will play out.

Slovenia

Slovenia

Mexico

With the current president of the United States declaring that he will build a border wall between America and Mexico and the latter will have to cover all the costs, including labor and material, we can just tell you the friendship is not a sweet one. This statement has worsened the dislike the Mexicans already had for America and its people.

Mexico

Mexico

Canada

One of the closest neighbors to America has an unfavorable view of them – Canada. Based on a survey conducted, it showed that more than 50% of Canadians couldn’t stand Americans, especially due to the developments of Trump becoming president and his new laws and policies not meshing well with those of Canada. Besides, he is not helping matters based on how he handles certain situations, even those of a critical nature.

Canada

Canada

Sweden

America tends to have a crazy fetish for Sweden, and this has turned off Sweden big time. Also, Americans creating this “paradise on earth” feeling has made the Swedes look at them differently. Just imagine, a country that does not like Trump, then becoming the president of a country they are not too fond of, it will make matters worse for sure. A report indicated that more than 51% of Swedes dislike the people of the country.

Sweden

Sweden

Belgium

For the fact that many Americans believe Belgium is a city in Germany has not made them the best of friends with the country. Belgium natives are pretty upset that many Americans, who say they have an educational degree, cannot locate Belgium on a map. Well, America’s poor sense of geography has put them in a bad light for the country.

Belgium

Belgium

Chile

Almost half of Chileans have a negative view on America, even though the country has categorically placed Chile as one of the strongest U.S partners in Latin America. Because of this level of dislike, it may pose a problem for America when they are on a business mission with the country.

Chile

Chile

France

One thing a lot of Americans don’t know about France is that while only a limited number of Americans can speak French, a vast majority of French people know English. This gives them a good hint of knowing when they are insulted by Americans (who don’t even realize). A warm welcome is a good thing, but when it is not so welcoming for the tourists, you know there is tension in the midst.

France

France

Tunisia

America did a film, Innocence of Muslims, that they released back in 2013, and the contents that were portrayed did not sit well with the people of Tunisia. They were so upset to the point where they banned the movie from being aired in their theaters or even on any of their TV stations. The films did a great lot that caused close to 50% of Tunisians disliking America and its people.

Tunisia

Tunisia

Germany

The relationship between America and Germany has been an up and down one, swinging closer to the side of dislike. The past has played a lot in building a relationship like this, but Germany sees Americans as lazy slobs.

Germany

Germany

Pakistan

Pakistan has not had a good running with America since 9/11, and the tension has been transferred to having a watchful eye on all Pakistanis. With this comes a large presence of U.S. military roaming Pakistan, and this has made a lot of the locals dislike America in general.

Pakistan

Italy

Americans are making many Italians upset because they think they know so much and are also working based on what they see in films. Recently, an Italian was asked what the most cringing and annoying thing an American would do that gets them upset is the “hand gesture” that they see in films. For those who have watched Italian-themed American movies, they will see the gesture that is being referred to. Americans believe it means a form of emphasis, but Italians say it has a deeper meaning – what do you want?

Italy

Italy

Thailand

Many people see pictures and videos of American tourists feeding or getting up close and personal with wildlife in Thailand and believe it is a great feeling. Oh, they must be a set of tamed animals. In reality, most of Thailand hates that the animals are heavily sedated, while their paws and claws are trimmed and cut to please the tourists. This certainly does not sit well with Thais as they believe their animals should live a free and healthy life their way.

Thailand

Thailand

India

We have seen a lot of Indian photos online and must agree that they are indeed beautiful. The country has a rich and bountiful history, but with this history comes a dislike for some tourists – like those from America. According to one popular blogger, they note their disgust at American tourists coming to India to talk about “they are on a mission to find their true self.” For that blogger and many others, they want to clarify to Americans that India is not a “lost and found” place where they can just find themselves, so they should simply come, enjoy there, and leave.

India

Scotland

Many people see Americans have to be loud and proud, but for Scotland, Americans are truly annoying, especially because of their accent. They believe tourists should simply come, talk normally, and just leave that “proud” talking somewhere else.

Scotland

Scotland

England

British people are relatively calm, reserved, polite, and quiet, so when Americans come with their vulgar behavior, it is a big turnoff for them. Also, the soldiers of the Queen’s Guard are most times at the end of all those rowdy behaviors.

England

England

Czech Republic

Like many other countries, the Czech Republic is tired of Americans not using their “common sense” in understanding a map and realizing they are a country and not a part of another country. For the Czechs, the question as to whether they are the same with Russians, are truly annoying and have been riding the nerves of those being asked. For all American tourists who wish to visit the Czech Republic on their next vacation, they are begging to leave this question completely out.

Northern Ireland

For those tourists who wish to visit Northern Ireland the next time around, they want you to know they are a country even though they are a part of the U.K. Many Americans do not know this reality and still fail to believe it even when they are told. Aside from Northern Ireland, Wales, England, and Scotland are a part of the U.K. Great Britain, however, does not take in Northern Ireland. Maybe to help push you to do a little more research about this region, here is another piece of truth…The British Isles is different from British Island. Do some research!

Northern Ireland

Cambodia

One may not know the complete history and policies that govern a city, but the least one can do is find out as much as they can before they visit an area. Cambodians have had it up to their sleeve with Americans who constantly disregards the many signs posted all over the city about the dress code when visiting the Angkor Wat Temples. An Odyssey author has voiced their displeasure over the way American tourists disregard the culture of a country and their sacred places. They note the Angkor Wat Temples are sacred and are often filled with monks praying and meditating, and as a sign of respect, women ought to cover their knees and shoulders before entry. However, American tourists believe they are bigger than that and generally wear skimpy clothing. That, for sure, is a big sign of disrespect.

Cambodia

Cambodia

Austria

Being a tourist means you want to travel to new places, meet new people, experience a new culture, and last but not least, try local food. But, Austrians say whenever an American tourist visits their country, they sideline the local restaurant and run to McDonald’s. If you ask us, Americans are not in for trying anything new and interesting.

Austria

Austria

Norway

Norwegians are disgusted because most American tourists believe everything has been catered to their life and wherever they go, it is a fun park for their amusement. In certain parts of Norway, like Svalbard, tourists are known to step over their bounds and walk into people’s homes and space. But, when they get thrown out, they somehow get upset – come on now, who wants a stranger stepping into their home uninvited?

Norway

Norway

Jordan

In a report issued from research that was done in Jordan, it showed that only an average of 15% loves all the states in the U.S. Like many other countries, especially like Egypt, Jordanians dislike America with a passion and don’t view their existence in a positive light.

Jordan

Jordan

Turkey

Since the war started and Syrians had to run away from their country, Turkey has realized that America has done nothing to help the struggles of these people or those that have been affected directly and indirectly. This has made them have a huge hatred for America in general.

Turkey

Turkey

Lebanon

Lebanon, like many Middle East countries, does not necessarily like America, and more than 60% of people have voiced their disapproval of the country. With the induction of Donald Trump as president, there seems to be a little bit of hope as the country prefers him over many of the past leaders.

Lebanon

Lebanon

Tajikistan

Tajikistan is a Sunni Muslim country, and after a 2014 research, it showed more than 53% of the natives disapprove of Americans. The country has given most of its ratings to Russia – an average of 93% – and with it being really poor and corrupt, they are struggling to keep their economy going.

Tajikistan

Tajikistan

Iran

Iran made it to this list, which is not a surprise to anyone as the two countries have never liked each other for the longest while. In 1979, Iran held about 66 Americans hostage for more than a year when they took charge of the U.S. embassy in Tehran. Since then, nothing has been going good between the two nations, worsening when the United States imposed sanctions on Iran related to their nuclear operations.

Iran

Iran

Iraq

With a 67% dislike of the U.S. by Iraqis, we are surprised the numbers are higher. The two countries don’t know what it is like to have peace between them, and with ongoing wars, the Asian nation has gone through a lot of destruction – some under the hands of America.

Iraq

Iraq

China

China is the 4th largest country in the world but still sits behind America. However, many of the items sold and circulated in the United States are from China. Still, with recent changes in policies about trading between the two countries, the dislike ratings from China’s side have risen exponentially.

China

China

Cuba

There was once a striving relationship between Cuba and the United States. Still, it all changed when American tourists found it more fascinating to visit the country illegally than through the right channels. After the 2008 elections and Obama became president, there was hope between the two countries. They are somehow getting back on good terms, and American tourists can now travel smoothly to the Spanish-speaking country.

Cuba

Cuba

Libya

For Americans to travel to Libya these days, it is a bit challenging, and even though they can get a visa to visit the country, it is not a popular occurrence. There are reports that many terrorists have set up their bases in Libya, so for someone to want to visit, it is a bit strange. But, Libya itself is not too great when it comes to having a good American relationship.

Libya

Libya

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia and the United States are friends, but that does not give the leeway for tourists to travel there as freely as they need. There are reports that Americans can only get a visa to visit the country if they are going there to teach English or work in the oil and gas industry. The recent rumors of an American reporter being murdered in Saudi Arabia have not made it look good for both countries.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia

Yemen

The United States has been worrying a lot about Yemen due to the increased terrorist behaviors happening in the country. As a result of this, America has held a lot of Yemeni citizens at Guantanamo Bay as hostages. This action does not make the average dislike of America (70%) a surprise, and less than 10% find the current leadership of the United States favorable.

Yemen

Yemen

Serbia

Serbia does not like the United States to no levels since the 1999 Nato bombings. Serbia claims the United States is an advocate of the devil, and there are currently many anti-America groups throughout the country. So, what caused this major hatred? Well, it is reported that during the war, more than 3,000 innocent natives were killed by America.

Serbia

Serbia

Malaysia

Malaysia is a Muslim country, and with the current pressure from America on Muslim countries, their dislike has risen a great deal. Based on reports, only an average of about 26% of Malaysians like the U.S. while the other hates them due to the loud and rude behavior of American tourists when they visit.

Malaysia

Malaysia

North Korea

Funny enough, it is said that North Korea hates practically every country, so when they say their dislike for America is high, it is no surprise. North Koreans believe America is a huge threat to them, and when a survey was conducted recently, no one said they liked the U.S.

North Korea

Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan now hates the United States even though they were once a member of the Soviet Union. The United States established a base in the country and was there for more than twelve years. However, back in 2014, Kyrgyzstan decided they were not going to renew the contract. That development caused a major rift between the two countries.

Japan

Japan has been a hot spot for tourists for years, especially “Miyabi” in Kyoto City, where they experience a rich culture that the country has to offer. For a long time, Kyoto residents have loved the idea, but as the years went by, the Japanese no longer wanted it to be that way. They noted too many tourists coming to the area were causing it to lose its natural touch and was somehow losing its taste for many. Also, the locals noted their favorite restaurant where they could get their local delicacies are putting tourists over them, and they are not comfortable with that.

Japan

Japan

Iceland

Iceland has become an all-time favorite for tourists and has been voted one of the best travel destinations. The country presents a “Disney” feeling, but in an adult style, and with the fame it got from the Game of Thrones series, a lot of visitors are flooding the area. This is not a great feeling for the locals as they believe the tourists will eventually come in and destroy the legacy they have worked hard to build and maintain.

Iceland

Uruguay

Uruguay is a famous spot for tourists as it lies between two popular countries – Argentina and Brazil. To make it even more intriguing for visitors to visit, the country has legalized the use of cannabis in recent times. In addition to this, the meatpacking spot, Fray Bentos, is a major attraction for those tourists coming in.

Uruguay

Uruguay

Croatia

Croatia is the home for Game Of Thrones – the Dubrovnik City – where the producers and directors did their action. Because of this, more than 10,000 people visit the area daily as this area became a major attraction for tourists from all over, especially the U.S., the population of natives who lived there decreased drastically (from 5000 people in 1991 to 1157 in 2018).

Croatia

Netherlands

Many people have rushed to visit the Netherlands over the years because of its beauty and lots of intriguing actions. Amsterdam, Netherland is one of the most popular cities in the country, sees more than 15 million visitors each year – even though less than a million people live here. The city is pretty small, so the overcrowding of visitors has made the locals hate the fact that so many tourists are coming in.

Morocco

Morocco sees so many visitors a day that over the last ten years, the total amount increased by over 8 million per day. At first, the locals loved the idea of the tourists coming in as it meant a lot of boost for their economy. However, as it continued, they started to regret liking the idea from the onset as the locals started to feel the brunt of the heat. The rent of real estate started going up because of the exchange in currency even though their salaries were not moving up an inch.

Mauritius

Mauritius is located roughly 1200 miles from the southeastern coast of Africa and in the Indian Ocean. About 1.3 million people are living here and are considered one of the most overpopulated countries. Each year, their tourism industry sees about a million visitors, and with the small area, it can sure be a hard experience getting through the towns and cities with ease.

Myanmar

Tourists visiting the country have been relatively new for everyone, and so far, it has somehow gotten on the nerves of the locals. One of the major problems they have is the lack of respect by tourists for their sacred areas like the Valley of Temples. Also, the residents have noted that their pagodas have been reduced by half and are not an acceptable thing by locals. The fact that tourists are climbing to the top of the temple is one of the main contributing reasons why the pagodas are falling off.

Myanmar

Vietnam

Vietnam’s Halong Bay is a popular spot for tourists, and the area does get a lot of visitors each year. With the influx of tourists in this country, there is an increased need for tour guides and boat operators. There is a negative aspect to this whole occurrence. Many of the guides and boat operators are more focused on making money than giving a true experience to those visiting.

Vietnam

Philippines

When it comes to “Islands,” the experience is different and somehow has more fun, as it presents a “country in a country feeling.” There are many islands in the Philippines, including Palawan Island. It is an epitome of beauty with over 36,00 residents and an average of 20,000 tourists. For many of the locals, the recent developments are costing them their livelihoods as the farmlands have been taken over by developers to build resorts and hotels to accommodate the visitors. Also, there is said to be a shortage of local delicacies for locals to enjoy these days. A lot of tourists do visit the area to get a good tan as well.

Philippines

Colombia

Colombians are noticing the influx of tourists in the country, with recent plans by officials to develop the area without care for what the locals think is a significant issue. Take, for instance, the capital for tourism in the country, Cartegna, the projects in the area are being funded by foreign investors all in hopes of making a lot from the tourists coming in. Putting the locals at a disadvantage is a “back burner” focus for these officials.

Colombia

Colombia

South Africa

One of Africa’s most tourists-visited countries is South Africa, and without thought for the crime and drought going on in the area, visitors still turn up in high numbers daily. The capital, cape Town, was once an excellent place for locals to invest in real estate, but with the tourists visiting this area the most, the prices have gone sky-high, which is a bother for the residents. These days, only the wealthy can easily afford to live comfortably in the capital.

South Africa

Portugal

Portugal has received a lot of tourists, especially in the city of Lisbon. Based on reports, tourism is one of the main sustainers in the area, and they are giving preference to visitors over their locals. For locals, they can no longer find it easy to live in and around the city as the prices for homes and rentals are going up, and preference is given to visitors looking for places to rent. It is also said the older areas – with a lot of history to the country – are being renovated to accommodate tourists.

Portugal

Oxford

One former Lord Mayor of Oxford, Mary Clarkson, has voiced her disappointment that locals have to leave their place of comfort to accommodate tourists who the officials are giving more favors to. Seeing the city is relatively small, it can be hard to move around due to the number of tourists who visit each year quickly.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu has been receiving so many visitors that the Peruvian government has issued an order that tourists can only spend a certain amount of time in the area to avoid overcrowding. They have also employed tour guides who help tourists pick from three intriguing trails they want to visit.

China

You must be wondering why China made it to this list twice…well, with the reality that Americans can travel to numerous places without a visa, they do need one to go to China. They have to go through the Chinese consulate to obtain their visa (one that is under their state). Generally, when an American gets a visa for tourism or business, they can travel on it for about ten years.

India

To obtain a visa in India, it is a rigorous process, and a lot of people there use agencies to help resolve it faster. There are currently two visas issued in the country, a single-entry electronic visa which is issued online and given to tourists that want to enter the country for 30 days, and another, multiple-entry, that gives traveling access up to 10 years.

Kenya, like most other African nations, requires American visitors to obtain a visa before they can enter the country. A traveler can get a single-entry visa online to visit for short periods, but if they are looking to travel multiple times, they will have to go through the Kenyan consulate in New York. There is also the option to get an East Africa Tourist Visa to allow travelers to visit multiple nations on the African continent for up to 90 days.
